‘Rupee’ comes from the Sanskrit word Rupyakam which means a silver coin. The history of the Indian rupee dates back to the 5th Century BC.

The modern Indian Rupee sign came into existence on 15 July 2010, designed by Udaya Kumar, a designer from IIT Bombay. The new symbol is an amalgamation of Devanagari –‘Ra’ and the Roman ‘R’ without the stem.
